As winter blankets this part of the world in frosty beauty, it also brings along the unwelcome companions of seasonal illnesses. We are a team of parents in this office and for us, there's arguably nothing worse than witnessing your child battle through sickness during this chilly time. The combination of cold weather and pesky germs can lead to a range of winter ailments. In this blog, we'll explore the challenges of winter-time illnesses and offer lists of holistic remedies to help bring comfort to your little ones.

Holistic Remedies to Help Your Child:

  • Warmth and Rest:

    • Ensure your child stays warm with cozy blankets and layers.

    • Encourage plenty of rest to help their bodies recover.

  • Hydration is Key:

    • Offer warm beverages like herbal teas, broths, or hot water with a splash of lemon.

    • Keep a water bottle within reach to prevent dehydration.

  • Fighting a Fever:

    • Place a cool, damp washcloth on their forehead.

    • Give a lukewarm bath after administering a fever reducer.

    • Dress them in light layers and offer a light blanket if chills occur.

    • Avoid aspirin for fever; contact the doctor in specific situations.

NEVER give your child aspirin for a fever. It has been linked to a potentially fatal condition called Reye Syndrome.

Call your doctor right away if your child:

is less than 3 months old and has any fever.

is 3-5 months old with a fever of 101 degrees or higher.

is 6 months or older with a fever of 102 degrees or higher.

has a fever combined with trouble breathing and/or a rash.

  • Soothing a Sore Throat:

    • For children aged 1 and older, try honey with a splash of lemon juice. (see our fave ginger tea below).

    • Gargling with salt water is suitable for children aged 5 and above.

    • Warm tea, like peppermint or chamomile, can be comforting.

    • Consider a cool mist humidifier in their room for relief.

  • Handling a Runny Nose:

    • Encourage nose-blowing to clear congestion.

    • Saline sprays are great if they are brave enough to allow it.

    • Use a bulb syringe for babies.

  • Addressing a Cough:

    • Honey and lemon act as natural cough suppressants. My kids actually beg me for my honey ginger tea. It is peeled boiled ginger, lemon zest, cinnamon, lemon juice and a lot of honey, serve it warm and they will love it!

    • Marshmallow Root, for children over the age of 3. When ingested (they have some small dissolvable tablets available now in most stores). Marshmallow root creates a protective antioxidant film called mucilage. This can coat the inner lining of the throat (mucosa) to help soothe irritation and promote healing related to dry cough and sore throat.

    • Steam baths and humidifiers help ease congestion.

    • Vapor rubs with essential oils may provide relief. We use Vicks rubs all over the chest, back and feet.

  • Relieving a Headache:

    • Massage neck and shoulders for tension headaches.

    • Use lavender and eucalyptus oils for sinus headaches (mixed with a carrier oil).

    • Encourage breaks and good lighting for eye strain headaches.

    • Ensure a balanced diet and adequate water intake.

  • Easing a Bellyache:

    • Try chamomile tea for its anti-inflammatory and sedative properties.

    • Ginger, in the form of tea or ginger ale, can soothe an upset stomach.

    • Peppermint is also effective in calming stomach discomfort.

    • Apply heat and offer bland foods for relief.

  • Natural Immune Boosters:

    • Ensure your child gets a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and immune-boosting nutrients.

    • Prepare nutrient-rich soups with vegetables and lean proteins to provide essential vitamins and minerals.

    • Consider supplements like vitamin C, under the guidance of your pediatrician.

  • Comfort Foods:

    • Offer soothing foods like warm oatmeal, yogurt, and mashed potatoes that are easy on the stomach.

  • Create a Cozy Environment:

    • Make their resting area comfortable with soft pillows and favorite blankets.

    • Provide distractions like books, movies, or soothing music to lift their spirits.

While winter illnesses can be challenging for both parents and children, the power of comfort and care cannot be underestimated. These holistic remedies aim to provide relief and support your child's recovery during the season. Remember, if symptoms persist or worsen, consult your pediatrician for personalized advice and care. In the meantime, shower your little one with love, warmth, and the healing touch of these winter wellness remedies.
